I spotted an E-class wagon on the way home yesterday, which is not a common sight around these parts (I see more Roadmaster wagons than E-class wagons). Even more unusual, is the Volvo C30 waiting to turn right up ahead in this picture. Man those are good looking.

So many longroofs in one picture. I’m not ready for this.

I know. I was so focused on the Merc and the C30, that I didn’t even notice the other Volvo in the left turn lane.

I still believe this is the best looking mass production car of the modern era. I’d yearn for one (pine, even!), but older modern luxury cars scare me too much. Everything is intertwined, so you can't just let stuff break like you could in the old days.

DAMMIT C30 WHY U NO RWD!!!

I love the way C30's look, I just hate the way they drive. I have tried convincing Mrs. blackcar she needs to replace her S60 with a C30, just so I can drive it every once in a while. It hasn’t worked yet, I still have hope though.

Really? All I see is a common taxi model.

Even if they were everywhere (which, in the US, they most definitely are not, especially the estate version), there's something about the magnificent curvilinear design on that thing. Not quite a box like the classic models, but definitely not a melted bar of soap like the current ones. The saloon versions are everywhere in my area, but the estates are very rare — partly because Merc also sells 2-3 other SUV/Crossovers at that price point, so most people prefer those.

It’s odd to me how Americans pick either the sedan or the crossover. It might just be me, but the wagon (in general, Merc specifically) has a much more ‘professional’ or ‘serious’ look than the soccermom crossovers, and a lot more practicality than the sedan versions.

Wagons and Minivans have been ignored here for quite a while — crossovers can usually be sold for more money and essentially the same level of content. It’s crazy. Then you have the occasional wagon, which is usually only sold in 1-2 packages that include things that drive it right up to the price of an even more capable SUV from the same brand, so there's cannibalization. At least until a few years ago, the driving force behind this was to build as many "trucks" as possible to benefit from more lenient emissions/economy standards.

... these are so common where I live that I rarely notice either of them. The C30 is awesome - I would have bought one if they had not discontinued it.

People in the upper 5-10% of the income distribution love wagons and little hatches like the C30. I assume this is because they have been exposed to Europe more than most Americans. The PNW has a higher concentration of wagons that runs further down the income spectrum, so when you combine the two, wagons from ‘luxury’ makes are pretty common.

I live next to and work in a very high income area, but it’s mostly expensive SUV’s and CUV’s. And Teslas, lots of Teslas.
